Show Your Work: Protecting Academic Integrity in an Online Environment with Proctorio and Turnitin

Upholding academic integrity is increasingly becoming more complex. Today, there is nearly unlimited access to academic support, from online searches to paid services. It can be difficult to identify the line between homework help and misconduct. This session explored best practices to protect academic integrity and how to equip classrooms with proper tools to help deliver academic integrity education, especially in the digital world.

Proctorio Founder and CEO Mike Olsen commented on the sped up evolution in online proctoring. What had begun as an accommodation became a necessity during the pandemic. In this new normal, the future of online proctoring is adaptation, recognizing that today's students have new needs. The role of edtech companies is to adjust to the changing face of education.

Another critical component is using technology to build students' and teachers’ confidence in work originality. The Turnitin x Microsoft Teams plagiarism prevention integration automates the process of checking assignments for text similarity and creates an easily repeatable, sustainable academic integrity practice that gives educators more capacity to teach rather than review. Another best practice is providing students with the right help at the right time. Turnitin Draft Coach—which gives simultaneous feedback on plagiarism, citations, and grammar while students are writing—helps classrooms ensure that each student has individualized feedback. By end of year, Draft Coach will be available on Microsoft Word on the web—sign up to be the first to know.
